Luke 4:31-44 “Dr. Luke’s New Year Stramash”
Sermon, February 9th, 2014
Jesus heals people possessed by evil spirits and cures Simon’s mother-in-law.
Jesus heals people possessed by evil spirits and cures Simon’s mother-in-law.
Jesus preaches a sermon in his home town of Nazareth and is thrown out of town.
Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness, how does he respond?
The genealogy and baptism of Jesus tell us something about his credentials.
Luke tells us about the messenger (John the Baptist) and his message and the King and his Kingdom.
Zachariah and Elizabeth are old in years and have not been blessed with children. Zachariah is serving as a priest in the Temple when an angel appears before him and reveals that he and Elizabeth will become parents. They will have a son called John who will ‘prepare the way for the Lord’. John’s birth is God’s big surprise for them.
Luke is writing an orderly account of the birth and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. As a servant of the word, he is writing eye witness accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry which is the fulfilment of the prophetic promises of the Old Testament.
As good stewards we ought to use all of the resources that God has given us wisely- what does the Bible teach us about godly stewardship and sustainable development?
The opening chapters of the book of Genesis have something to say about how God created the world and the origins of life. Is it necessary for the Biblical account of creation to be in conflict with contemporary scientific thinking on these matters?
Malachi 2: 17-3:5 is a word of judgement coupled with hope.
What are the people saying in Malachi’s day? Words that weary the Lord. In vs 5 he pronounces the judgement.
So where is the hope? See vs 3:1. It promises one who will prepare the
way of the Lord. God promises John the Baptist 450 yrs before he comes-
because God has an eternal plan in Christ- into which he has weaved the
people of God in Malachi’s day and in our day too. That is the source of
the Christian’s hope.
